You just got certified, you’ve got your kit, maybe you’re working from a home studio or renting a chair. Clients are starting to trickle in. Everything’s exciting — until the scheduling headaches start.
Here are five booking mistakes we see new lash artists make, and how to avoid them.
1. Using DMs as Your Booking System
Instagram DMs, text messages, WhatsApp — we get it, it feels personal. But once you have more than 10 regular clients, you will double-book someone. You will forget to confirm. And you’ll spend hours every week going back and forth on times.
Fix: Use a dedicated booking system that lets clients self-book. You set your availability, they pick a slot. No back-and-forth.
2. Not Charging a Deposit
No-shows are the number one income killer for lash artists. A client books a 2-hour full set appointment, doesn’t show up, and you’ve just lost $150+ in revenue you can never get back.
Fix: Require a deposit at booking time. Even $25-50 dramatically reduces no-shows. If you’re not sure how to word it, we wrote a full guide on booking policies that actually reduce no-shows.
3. Setting the Same Duration for Every Service
A classic full set takes 2-2.5 hours. A fill takes 45-90 minutes. A removal takes 30 minutes. If all your services show as “1 hour” in your calendar, you’re either rushing through sets or leaving dead time after fills.
Fix: Set accurate durations for each service. Add buffer time between appointments (15-30 min) for cleanup, photos, and bathroom breaks. If your whole menu needs rethinking, start with how to build a service menu that actually sells.
4. Not Sending Aftercare Instructions
Your client walks out with perfect lashes. Two days later, they’re using oil-based makeup remover, sleeping face-down, and pulling at their extensions. They come back for a fill with half their lashes gone and blame your work.
Fix: Send aftercare instructions automatically after every appointment. It takes zero effort once set up, and it protects both your work and your reputation. We’ve got ready-to-use scripts for confirmations, aftercare, and rebooking you can copy and start using today.
5. Hiding Your Booking Link
You’ve got a booking system — great. But if clients have to DM you to find the link, you’ve added unnecessary friction. Every extra step between “I want lashes” and “I’m booked” costs you clients.
Fix: Put your booking link everywhere: Instagram bio, story highlights, business card, Google Business profile. Make it impossible to miss.
The Takeaway
None of these mistakes are fatal. Every successful lash artist figured them out eventually. But the sooner you fix your booking workflow, the sooner you can stop playing admin and start building the business you actually want. If you’re still using generic tools that weren’t designed for lash work, that might be part of the problem — here’s why lash artists deserve better software.
